Tutorial: How to move to a different Mastodon Server

https://social.lol/@pzumk/116160727013426766

as mentioned earlier, changing mastodon instances to social.lol (by omg.lol) was easier than expected, but the tutorials out there are confusing and bad.

during the process i took the chance to write

a simple 5-step tutorial on how to move to a different mastodon server:

  1. your old account will be archived with a redirect notice after step 5 – if you want to edit your profile or unpin a toot, do it now. followers migrate automatically, accounts you follow will be imported in step 3. hashtags and mute filters need to be added manually. it is recommended to use a computer, but i have done everything on my phone.

  2. log in to your old account on the old server. go to preferences → import and export → export (~/settings/export) and download all csv files (follows, lists, you mute, you block, domain blocks, bookmarks).

  3. sign up on the new server (if not done yet) and log in to your new account in a separate browser tab.

  4. on your new account go to preferences → import and export → import (~/settings/imports) and import (merge and upload) all downloaded csv files.

  5. on your new account, go to preferences → account → moving from a different account → create an account alias → create alias (~/settings/aliases) and add your old handle (username@yourOLDserver.tld).

  6. after the alias is set up, finish the migration from your old account in preferences → account → move to a different account → move followers (~/settings/migration). enter your new handle (username@yourNEWserver.tld) and the new account's password, then click 'move followers' and wait a few minutes.

👏 well done! you have (hopefully) successfully migrated to your new server.

feel free to share this on mastodon.
